Today my daughter came home with a surprise for me, a gorgeous old Singer sewing machine. I have always wanted one and admire them every where I go. I researched on line thanks to Alex I Askaroff (Singer sewing machine dating guide) that it was made in Great Britain in 1945. So as the War was ending my machine was being made, what a lovely piece of history. Now I am on the look out for one of those beautiful old sewing treadle tables for it to sit on and be in my home and sewing room for many many years. I just wish I'd have taken the one my dear old Mum had many years ago and gave away! Maybe it is only as we get older we start to appreciate these things.
I wish I would have kept my Mom's machine like that. I don't know where it ended up. You should be able to find the table somewhere. Lucky you.

Snap! Just like the one I posted about last week. I too wish I had been able to keep my grandmothers, but my sister is caring well for it back in Melbourne. My 'new' on is in working order, and at present down in the workshop having a little plastic surgery on her table to smarten up the flaking varnish. Mine is dated at early '50's according to Alex Askiroff. Looking forward to using it.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was young my mother had one of these Singer sewing machines, I used to sew a lot on it, one hand twisting the handle and the other guiding the material, brings back lots of lovely memories, my sister was given it and I was given my mums knitting machine. Unfortunately both the machines are in machine cemetery now :( Treasures yours Jude and a big well done to Kate for finding it !!! Love Eileen x x x
